Schedule Maintenance For Overnight Hours 

    One of the most effective ways to minimize disruption is to schedule maintenance during periods of reduced aircraft activity, often overnight. A defined overnight maintenance window gives contractors access to equipment and infrastructure while reducing conflicts with normal flight operations.

    However, nighttime does not necessarily mean the airfield is inactive. Cargo operations, maintenance flights, and other aircraft movements often continue around the clock. The available work window therefore needs to be established based on actual airport operations rather than assuming that all nighttime hours are available.

    Once a window has been established, the work should be organized around individual time requirements for tasks such as equipment isolation, electrical work, inspection, testing, and system restoration.

    Carry Out Maintenance In Phases 

      Large airfield electrical projects can create significant operational challenges if too much infrastructure is taken offline simultaneously. So, rather than shutting down an entire lighting system, contractors can divide the work into manageable phases. 

      Phased maintenance allows you to address individual circuits, taxiways, runway segments, or equipment groups in sequence. This approach reduces the number of systems affected by each outage and allows airport personnel to evaluate completed work before proceeding to the next phase.

      Phasing can also make troubleshooting easier, as problems detected after one section has been completed can be investigated and corrected before additional sections are brought into the project.

      Utilize Temporary Lighting Systems

        Depending on the project, temporary lighting can help maintain required operational capabilities where permanent systems are being modified, replaced or repaired. However, airport operators need to determine how temporary equipment will be powered, positioned, controlled, and tested before the outage is scheduled. 

        Also, in most cases, temporary lighting needs to be designed and implemented according to the different needs of the area going under maintenance. For example, a temporary lighting solution that works for one taxiway or maintenance phase may not be appropriate for a runway or another part of the airfield.

        Plan Outages Around System Restoration

          It’s also critical to allocate enough time for testing and restoration of the system being maintained, which includes tasks such as system inspection, controls verification, and lighting configuration confirmation.

          The maintenance plan should also include ample time to correct deficiencies discovered during testing to help avoid extending downtime beyond the original schedule.

          Involve All Stakeholders In Maintenance Planning

            Electrical maintenance on an active airport requires close coordination between airport management, air traffic controllers, and maintenance teams. Before work begins, airport management and air traffic controllers need to understand how planned electrical outages could affect runway or taxiway availability and aircraft movement procedures. The information provided needs to include exactly which systems will be unavailable, when the restriction will begin, and when the normal configuration is expected to return.

            At the same time, maintenance teams must have a clear work sequence and sufficient time for isolation, installation, testing and restoration without having a major impact on the safe, efficient operation of the airport.

            Communication is also critical if the lighting system cannot be restored within the planned window, so management can make operational decisions based on the airfield’s actual condition rather than the original maintenance schedule.
